One sunny day at the park...
Max is on the small slide. He goes down and down and down. Wheee! It is fun!
But his friends want to try the big slide.
"Max! Come try the big slide! It is so fun!" calls Maya.
Max looks at the big slide. It is REALLY tall. His eyes get wide.
Max shakes his head.
"No! That is too big! That is too high! That is too scary!" says Max.
Max stays on the small slide. But he watches his friends.
His friends go up and up the stairs.
They sit at the top of the big slide. They look so far away!
Then they go down!
"Wheeeeee!" they yell as they slide down fast. They are laughing and smiling!
Max feels something inside.
Part of him is scared. But another part of him wants to try it too!
Finally, Max decides to be brave.
"Okay. I am going to try the big slide," Max says quietly.
Slowly, Max walks to the stairs.
One step. Two steps. Three steps. The slide gets taller and taller.
Max's heart is beating fast. He is nervous. But he keeps going!
Finally, Max reaches the top.
"You can do it, Max!" yell his friends from below.
Max takes a deep breath.
"Okay. Here I go!"
Max sits at the top and pushes off.
He goes faster than he ever did on the small slide! The wind is in his hair!
Whoooooosh!
Max slides down and down and down! It is fast! It is exciting! It is AMAZING!
Max lands at the bottom!
"I did it! I did it! I did it!" yells Max, jumping up and down.
His friends cheer and hug him.
Max learned something important:
"New things are scary at first. But they can be really wonderful if you are brave and try!"
And Max goes down the big slide again. And again. And again!
